Voxeliens - A retro-style shooter built on voxels
  • Hi All,

I'm new to these forums, but thought you might be interested in Voxeliens; a project we've been working on for the last nine months or so. You're all retro game fans so I don't need to tell you which particular 1978 classic inspired this game ;-)

The game is a relatively simple shoot-em-up but with funky retro-style visuals. We don't want to aim for anything too complex as this is really a test of what it takes to build a game from start to finish. It's harder than we imagined, but we're getting close now.

Target platform is initially Windows and it should run fine on any DirectX 9 capable GPU. We intend to port it to Linux as well, and possibly MacOS. The price is not yet decided and we'll also aim to get it on some distibution services, though the details aren't really worked out yet.

Anyway, let us know what you think! If you like it you can follow us at our website (http://www.volumesoffun.com) or on Facebook or Twitter.
  • That looks gorgeous :D
  • Very yummy looking - hopefully it is practical to play too?
  • Thanks guys :-)

The switch to 3D has certainly presented some challenges. Such as how do you aim? The voxelien shadows were added to make this easier. And although we've shown different camera angles above, in practice you tend to use the camera angle in the first screenshot for 90% of the time.

But yes, I think it feels quite natural to play.
  • I love that :O
  • New screenshots added! These show a more mountainous terrain and a couple of new enemy types. Enjoy!

Also, our RSS feed has moved! If you were following it you need to change to http://www.volumesoffun.com/feed/. We'll try and set up redirects but they are not working at the moment.

  • Well, that looks absolutely gorgeous. VERY colorful.

    Is it done yet? :-)
  • Thanks :-) It's not finished yet but we're not too far off... I hope we can have the game out by the end of March. The timeline is subject to the unpredictability of a part time project, though!
  • We finally got around to making a video of the gameplay, you can see it here:

Compared to the previous screenshots it adds some menus, powerups, and a new desert terrain type. Hope you like it!
  • Well, we made it! I'm pleased to say that yesterday we started selling Voxeliens through our online store :-) There is also a demo available for download so please give it a try!
