I can't find the other thread about movies, so I thought I'd start a new one about both movies and TV.

I'm currently fascinated by Hannibal. I've not actually read any of the Hannibal Lecter novels or seen any of the movie adaptations (shocking, I know), so I have no idea how faithful this is to any of the characters or the plot of Red Dragon, of which this is supposedly an adaptation, or how to compares to any other versions. That said... I am loving this series. It's basically *SPOILERS*....

A main character who can empathise with anyone, including the most messed-up of the messed-up, who uses his talents to help the FBI track serial killers, and who is not the most stable individual in the world and may finally be cracking up; HL, who is acting as his psychiatrist and helping him along the path to full serial-killerdom while causing mayhem and turning others into killers; and a slew of supporting cast that so far includes a colleague who is worried about our main character, a true crime reporter who might be a psychopath all her own, and the surviving daughter of a serial killer who has managed to fall into HL's clutches

*/SPOILERS*
I have to say, the acting in this is superb (especially Madds Mikkelson as HL -- he's doing an amazing job of portraying a psychopath trying to pass as human), the pacing good, the humor subtle and the erotic undercurrents interesting. (I'm picking up hints of a possible dom-sub mechanic in how HL treats our main character) I will say my one quibble is that, at least with the first episode, it's obvious where NBC forced some changes -- some small things about pacing and shot layout make me think NBC ordered some reshoots to try to make it more network-like, and some of the story makes me think NBC tried to turn it more into a Law and Order style procedural (without too much success) -- there's even a brief explanation first episode about how Our Main Character can make inexplicable leaps in logic when figuring out killers! (Part of me is wondering how this series would have played out had it been on AMC, FX, HBO, or Showtime.) Those tiny irritants aside, I'm finding the show to be a wonderful exploration of what makes a psychopath a psychopath, and if it is possible to fight evil when it's attempting to corrupt an already unstable mind. Honestly, go find a torrent of it ;) Then again, it turns out I'm a bit of a Bryan Fuller fan (he wrote the series, and thanks to his needing to cheer himself up after handling the subject matter, he wrote the Pushing Daisies movie script that might wind up being Kickstarted), and I have an unhealthy obsession with the fields of psychology and psychiatry, so I'm pretty biased :)

NP
