Zapper: Electro Man

Not a game I’m especially familiar with this. Electro Man is a remake of an old DOS game originally published by EPIC MEGAGAMES (which demands capital letters still) also called… drum roll … ELECTRO MAN.

Ta da. No, I don’t know either. Anyway, it’s a platform-y affair with a Robocop-esque character as the lead. It’s very DOS-platform-game-y, definitely. Entertaining though.

Morskoi Boi

As kids, who among us never dreamed of growing up to be a sailor? After we go to space, naturally. This arcade game was created for those who never forgot their childhood dreams. And so, you are now looking through the periscope of a submarine and the enemy ships are sailing audaciously across the horizon, back and forth. Press “Start” and the green point representing a moving torpedo rushes towards the enemy vessel. The rest depends on the accuracy of the player-sniper.

From the Museum Of Soviet Arcade Machines, a playable version of Morskoi Boi (Sea Battle)

Booncey Booncey: Boonce

Oh come on, how could I not link to a site that describes itself as containing “thinly veiled knob gags” and then has absolutely no knob gags? Take that SEO experts. TAKE IT.

Sorry. Where was I? Ah yes, Boonce.

Bored during a geometry lesson, you start to imagine firing a cannon in amongst the shapes on your graph paper. Starting off with a very simple mechanic of ‘hit the target’ then including more complex ideas as the game goes on.

Here’s a video which pretty much explains the whole dealio better than I could…

It’s £1.50 on WinPhones with a possible PC port to follow later.

fAde

How much dodging is too much dodging? Probably fAde much dodging.

fAde is the minimalist six-dimensional tri-colored retro-inspired bullet dodging game!

There’s a lot of dodging. In three colours. With squares.

Simple stuff but probably pushing the limits of what my brain can keep track of. Which is nice.

Fruity Business: Five A Day

I must admit that whilst I completely miss the FULL ON OUT THERE that brought us Space Giraffe, I’m glad Jeff’s finding a certain funk in small game iOS development. So far, there’s not been a duffer only “some games that I enjoyed more than the others” although if I had to pick a favourite, it’d be between Gridrunner or Deflex. See, I can’t pick a favourite. Don’t ask me to do that.

I think I’m also a little sad that there’s no-one with the bollocks enough to go where Jeff went with Space Giraffe too, y’know? I sat down last week to play through some parts again and it’s still amazing years later. Frowny faces at the NUXX mode on the PC version though, it deserves to be played in its all out insane audio/visual glory.

So yes, anyway, before I get even more distracted. Coming as soon as Apple flick the switch is the latest of Jeff’s iThings, Five A Day and all the details are here.

via @llamasoft_ox himself, obv.

UPDATE: IT IS OUT. And sort of like a new age Time Pilot gone fruity mental. Which is a fairly good thing, I think.

Destructivator

Last one from me this bank holiday and the last of my “ooh, here’s a game that deserves a second outing” run of holiday posts…

Imagine if you took the Lode out of Lode Runner. Imagine then, if you added guns. And you had to shoot loads and loads and loads of things into lots of tiny pieces.

IMAGINE THAT NO MORE.

Here’s @ortoslon with a playthrough.

De Toren

De Toren is a game about climbing and mysteries.

And combo-ing. It’s a videogame after all.

Continue your ascent to madness or salvation! I know just how he feels…

Space Cabbage

Thanks Minion. Thinion.

Space Cabbage is one of many games for the entirely unofficial Look Around You competition from RR of old. It’s still one of my favourite games full stop so that kinda helps, eh?

Get the rest here.

Run Away

I would trade a thousand 8 bit styled Simon-Says-Press-Button-Now running games for one Run Away. I would trade many, many things for one Run Away. Probably even a kidney.

If I can’t convince you, perhaps Rab can.

Run Away is the best Bank Holiday 80 points around.. I am still sad there is no PC version.

Genetos

It’s Bank Holiday Monday, which seems as good an excuse as any to tease out some games from recent years that are worth a second outing.

I’ve long liked the idea of evolutionary games. I remember Peejay kicking around something in IRC about 10 years ago where a platform game starts out all ZX81-y and buggy and through the screens eventually becomes more of the kind of game you’d expect. I liked that, still do.

There’s been a few proper efforts to do similar things around, most notably in the commercial sector with Space Invaders Infinity Gene. Try as I might, I’ve never managed to get on with that. It feels a bit too nod nod knowing and whilst quite smart looking, there’s a void there that I can’t quite put my finger on. Genetos however? Now that I get along with. It might not be as designer-chic-cool but as love letters to videogame history go? It’s a fabulous thing. It helps that it’s really enjoyable to play, I suppose.

Genetos is free for Windows.

Still Crazy: Insane Plane

Fly along at super massive speeds, graze shrapnel, don’t die. Safe landings, people. That’s Insane Plane. It’s rather nippy on its feet.
