I wish I was a spaceman: Fireball SE

I wouldn’t have been able to resist adding a 5 on the end of the title myself but that’s me. And also just one of many reasons why I’m not allowed to name things too often. It ends in trouble.

Fireball is one of my personal favourites from the Radian Games arcade-game-things collection. It’s a take on Geometry Wars pacifism mode with a bit of Every Extend thrown in for good measure. And if that means nothing to you whatsoever, try “it’s a bit good, ok?”.

You’re a fireball in an arena. Things are trying to kill you. Luckily there’s some explosive things also floating about the place. Hit the explosives to buy yourself time between waves to not die. Collect the debris for prizes and points. Smile lots.

Anyway, it’s been lurking around a while in various forms. First on XBLIG then on PC/Mac and now it’s snuck onto iOS so you can do some dodging with your fingers.

Do make sure you change the sticks to floating in the settings or you end up with one of those hellish iOS fixed virtual stick things that no-one human can use yet still people persist with putting them in games. Screenshot is from the PC version because someone scribbled on the iOS ones. Don’t scribble on screenshots, folks.

See you on the scoreboards?

Run Away

I would trade a thousand 8 bit styled Simon-Says-Press-Button-Now running games for one Run Away. I would trade many, many things for one Run Away. Probably even a kidney.

If I can’t convince you, perhaps Rab can.

Run Away is the best Bank Holiday 80 points around.. I am still sad there is no PC version.

No Limits: Techno Chopper

I’m a complete terror for skipping over chopper-y cave flyer games these days and quite clearly this is TO MY SHAME. It is TO MY SHAME because at some point last year Techno Chopper got released on XBLIG (and the PC) and it is TO MY SHAME because I didn’t even take a gander over the demo. MY SHAME IS A STUPID SHAME.

Let’s be clear, Techno Chopper is tremendously daft. It’s an attempt at a musical brainmess with cave flying for good measure. The music twists, warps and bends along with the level. Will you die from pitchbend or hitting a wall first?

It might well hurt your head after a short while but I’m sold on it entirely. Do not make my shame your shame. SHAME NO MORE. I’m also sort of jealous I never thought of it first.

Linkystuffs for the free PC version and the pay-me-please version on XBLIG.

Bytown Lumberjack

Bytown Lumberjack is what happens when you drop the eighties muscley fantasy machismo of Golden Axe and other assorted beat-em-ups and replace it with woodland creatures being chainsawed to pieces in the most gory manner. So it’s sorta Moonstone meets Bambi meets Golden Axe, I suppose.

You can chainsaw a bear! A bear! Brilliant. Look at the trailer. Just look at it! Amazing.

I’m Feline Good: Laser Cat

Eighties style exploratory platform gaming crossed with a pub quiz. Yes.

Honestly, if you need any bigger a recommendation then I don’t know what to do with you. It’s called Laser Cat and it’s cheap. There you go.

Go go Laser Cat.

Ninjah Hardest: Ninjah

It seems like an eternity since we first featured Ninjah and lo, it is. Last on RR in the dim and distant depths of 2007 when we used to be someone (ah, them were the days).

Ninjah was, then, a brilliant little PC hookshot-y come platform-y game that had a fair amount of the forum enthralled. Now! In big-screen-o-vision, Ninjah makes its way to the Xbox360 and there was much, much cheering.

Why?

Because it’s still great. It’s still not been played by nearly enough people and there’s still time to remedy this. 360 owners who don’t find themselves denied the pleasures of XBLIG by Microsoft, Ninjah is well worth your eyeballs hovering over its wares. Take a look. Don’t just take my word for it, listen to the horse of course.

Hyperactive: Hypership Still Out Of Control

A trio of XBLIG’s from me to you, tonight.

Let’s get started with Hypership Still Out Of Control, a semi-sequel / expansion / followup thing to, wait for it… Hypership Out Of Control. Seasoned XBLIG game buyers and hopefully iOS thingy owners will already be aware of how knuckle bitingly brilliant and great-lost-arcade-game Hypership is. So, this is a great, knucklebitinglybrilliant piece of more of the same plus a bit more and a cherry on top, cherry not included[1].

It’s fairly straightforward stuff, you are a hypership, you are out of control, you have no brakes. So it’s forward, always forward, bloody fast. Collect coins, don’t hit rocks, score big, scream if you want to go faster.

80 points buys a lot of smiles here. It’s possibly not worth picking up if you already have the original bar supporting the developer (a fine and noble thing all the same) but if you’re new to Hypership, this is where to start. And you really should start.

[1] Thinking about it, the only thing that could make Hypership better would be the addition of fruit. If it’s a fight between fruit or coins, fruit wins everytime. Fruit for king!

Ninja Garden: Katana Land

In other “things that wot I saw a video of last year” news, what was then the excellent but probably lawsuit-worthy titled Ninja Garden is now Katana Land and available to buy.

It looks like this (WARNING: TRAILER INFINITELY MORE DULL THAN GAME), it’s very modern in looks but 16 bitty in play and is available to buy for a mere 80 Microsoft Silly Points.

It’s good! Get it!

Merthyr Qrth-phyl? Qrth-phyl

Is it possible to get a headline which makes less sense? I just don’t know.

What I do know is that Qrth-phyl is the latest thing from Hermit Games and it excites me greatly. I got to watch a tiny bit of it in action in glorious phone-o-vision around a year ago and it was looking pretty amazing then so lumme knows how much better it looks in full-scale-o-vision.

Glancing at the screenshots, I feel pretty safe in saying “very lovely indeed”.

Anyway, from the video I got to watch it appears to be some sort of transdimensional knot-in-snake-game beamed in from the planet headfuck. Which is to say, entirely up my street.

There’s loads more screenshots over here and a preview in this month’s Edge Magazine for all you dead tree fans out there.

It’ll be out soon for Windows and Xbox 360.
