Who/What are we?
OW:Videogames is/was Retro Remakes and is ran by Rob. We post about videogames that we like and think you might like too. Our only criteria is that we like at least one thing about it.
Want to drop us a line about something? mail Rob. He's slow but he gets there in the end.
owVideogames is dedicated to the memory of Steve Phelps aka The Toker and is produced with the utmost of thanks to [JJ].

Get Posted!
Got a game you think we might like and want to post about? Want to know how to get it posted here?
1. Have something for us to show and post about.
Videos, screenshots, playable builds. Give us a reason to want to post about it and give us something to post. We're mainly interested in awesome looking hobbyist stuff, retro remakes and curiosities but hey, try us. You never know. We like games.
2. Get in touch!
You can tweet me, mail me, rail me. No, don't rail me.
3. Be nice! We like nice!
Being nice is *so* much better than just firing off a generic press release and more likely to entice us to have a gander at your stuff.

Came for the remakes, only want the remakes?
That's ok, we've preserved all the Retro Remakes posts for all time and the drop list of remakes will continue to function and be added to should any more pass through our doors.

Zaga-33

Zaga-33 is a coffeebreak roguelike so tense and minimal it feels like a boardgame. You can walk, attack enemies by bumping into them, and pick up and use one-off items, that’s it. Your hit points don’t recover on their own, enemies never miss and don’t level you up, so fights are best avoided. Fortunately, most enemies have exploitable quirks: some, for example, are myopic; others overshoot when charging at you. Items matter as well: most last-level deaths can be traced to wasting nukes, drones and freezers early on.
I wish I was a spaceman: Fireball SE

I wouldn’t have been able to resist adding a 5 on the end of the title myself but that’s me. And also just one of many reasons why I’m not allowed to name things too often. It ends in trouble.
Fireball is one of my personal favourites from the Radian Games arcade-game-things collection. It’s a take on Geometry Wars pacifism mode with a bit of Every Extend thrown in for good measure. And if that means nothing to you whatsoever, try “it’s a bit good, ok?”.
You’re a fireball in an arena. Things are trying to kill you. Luckily there’s some explosive things also floating about the place. Hit the explosives to buy yourself time between waves to not die. Collect the debris for prizes and points. Smile lots.
Anyway, it’s been lurking around a while in various forms. First on XBLIG then on PC/Mac and now it’s snuck onto iOS so you can do some dodging with your fingers.
Do make sure you change the sticks to floating in the settings or you end up with one of those hellish iOS fixed virtual stick things that no-one human can use yet still people persist with putting them in games. Screenshot is from the PC version because someone scribbled on the iOS ones. Don’t scribble on screenshots, folks.
See you on the scoreboards?
Another Legend: Guardian Legend

The Guardian Legend Remake is a remake of The Guardian Legend.
It looks a bit like this…
As far as I can tell, work is still ongoing but not a bad start at all.
Zapper: Electro Man

Not a game I’m especially familiar with this. Electro Man is a remake of an old DOS game originally published by EPIC MEGAGAMES (which demands capital letters still) also called… drum roll … ELECTRO MAN.
Ta da. No, I don’t know either. Anyway, it’s a platform-y affair with a Robocop-esque character as the lead. It’s very DOS-platform-game-y, definitely. Entertaining though.

Destructivator

Last one from me this bank holiday and the last of my “ooh, here’s a game that deserves a second outing” run of holiday posts…
Imagine if you took the Lode out of Lode Runner. Imagine then, if you added guns. And you had to shoot loads and loads and loads of things into lots of tiny pieces.
Here’s @ortoslon with a playthrough.

Space Cabbage

Space Cabbage is one of many games for the entirely unofficial Look Around You competition from RR of old. It’s still one of my favourite games full stop so that kinda helps, eh?
Genetos

It’s Bank Holiday Monday, which seems as good an excuse as any to tease out some games from recent years that are worth a second outing.
I’ve long liked the idea of evolutionary games. I remember Peejay kicking around something in IRC about 10 years ago where a platform game starts out all ZX81-y and buggy and through the screens eventually becomes more of the kind of game you’d expect. I liked that, still do.
There’s been a few proper efforts to do similar things around, most notably in the commercial sector with Space Invaders Infinity Gene. Try as I might, I’ve never managed to get on with that. It feels a bit too nod nod knowing and whilst quite smart looking, there’s a void there that I can’t quite put my finger on. Genetos however? Now that I get along with. It might not be as designer-chic-cool but as love letters to videogame history go? It’s a fabulous thing. It helps that it’s really enjoyable to play, I suppose.
Still Crazy: Insane Plane

Fly along at super massive speeds, graze shrapnel, don’t die. Safe landings, people. That’s Insane Plane. It’s rather nippy on its feet.
Bang Bang Boot: Explodemon

If ever you find yourself having one of those intermittent “meh, they just don’t make videogames anymore” moments then STOP. Right there. Help is at hand. And it’s at hand in the shape of the boomtastic Explodemon. Explodemon never stops feeling like a videogame and it’s all the more awesome because of it.
For those who can’t quite work it out, you’re a man who explodes. Sometimes on a timer, sometimes at the press of a button but always, always with the exploding into itty bitty pieces. Explode to jump higher, explode to explode walls, explode to kill enemies. Essentially, do some exploding. That’s what it’s about. Exploding. It’s a little bit Megaman, a little bit before anyone had really thought of Megaman, and a lot of bit fun.
It’s been out a fair while on the PSofN and relatively recently EXPLODED onto the PC. With a bit of a shitty whimper, unfortunately. Which is unfair for something as lovely-slice-of-videogamey-fun as this.
Grab it for some Earth pounds direct or for a few days only as part of an Indie Royale bundle (about 3 and a bit days left at the time of writing).
No Limits: Techno Chopper

I’m a complete terror for skipping over chopper-y cave flyer games these days and quite clearly this is TO MY SHAME. It is TO MY SHAME because at some point last year Techno Chopper got released on XBLIG (and the PC) and it is TO MY SHAME because I didn’t even take a gander over the demo. MY SHAME IS A STUPID SHAME.
Let’s be clear, Techno Chopper is tremendously daft. It’s an attempt at a musical brainmess with cave flying for good measure. The music twists, warps and bends along with the level. Will you die from pitchbend or hitting a wall first?
It might well hurt your head after a short while but I’m sold on it entirely. Do not make my shame your shame. SHAME NO MORE. I’m also sort of jealous I never thought of it first.
Linkystuffs for the free PC version and the pay-me-please version on XBLIG.

Just Hangin’ Around: Wire Hang Redux

In the realms of “games that wot you jump up in”, outside of Zub, Wire Hang Redux is probably one of my biggest loves. Fairly long in the tooth (2004, although based on a slightly older game) it’s nice to see it finally getting a new and slightly shinier update for 2012. I realise in this post-iThing world that this sort of game is very much done to death on handhelds but still, they’re not Wire Hang and I *like* Wire Hang.
Grapple your way as high as possible, don’t drop off the screen. It’s really quite compulsive. For a few pennies here and there on the Mac App Store or direct from Matt on the Windows box. (Also runs fine under Wine I believe)
