Hi All, I've been working on a Quazatron Remake for some (quite considerable) time and haven't bothered posting here as I wasn't sure it was something I'd ever get finished or at least past a beta version! Well low and behold it seems to be coming along quite well (now I've gone and done it!) so thought I'd stick something up on the board. I've put together a little info website - totally no flash or frills - but it gives an idea of the game and progress to date: http://www.groovyboarder.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Cheers!

Cool. Good luck with getting it wrapped up. I started a remake of this a looong time ago but didn't get much further than making a level map or two and getting a player wondering around.

Wow! That looks awesome! It's always nice to see more 3D remakes around. I'd love to play it when it's finished (assuming I can make WINE run it, haha!). Good luck in getting it finished!

Excellent, another Quazatron remake. One of my all time faves. I like some of the new gfx touches, transparent info screens, the teleport "tubes" and light flares from shielded bots... I like the new views and i'm sure its gonna be great fun to play But i don't like some of the robot models. Good luck

Thanks for the comments! Ah, the robot models haven't changed since I started pulling the game together. They were basically rough placeholders but've kind of stuck. I'd intended to animate them and replace the textures but that'll be one of the last things to do, once I have everything else in place and optimised - I'll have a better idea then of just how many frames I've got to play with, without everything grinding to a halt! I'd thought the inclusion of the scrolling text font messages would hit the speed quite badly but its running better than expected (though its outside the main game loop which restricts the speed to 40fps).

Very nice, although the window seems a bit small IMO. If it was me, I think I'd make it full-screen with small floating panels round the edge for the HUD stuff.

That's a great idea - that's what I'd do, so... To avoid cluttering up the screen the panels could even appear and dissappear as needed. Based on the single screenshot I can see of a shielded droid I don't think the effect looks very good, but it's a WIP picture so there's still time...and it may look better when ingame. I really like the computer terminals though - they look great.

Looks good. Never really understood Quazatron but then again I first plated it on emulator and I had no insructions so not a clue what I was doing . Then again I coud not get away with Paradroid either. Maybe I am just a bit thick

Looking good. I can beat Caff, I've started three versions of Quazatron in the past and still haven't really got anywhere.
Why such a small game window? Looks like you're only using a quarter of the available screen. Also the viewing angle looks a bit too low and zoomed in too much.

The original layout was full screen 3d (its actually easier to do in DBP than working with a mix of 2D/3D and having to refresh the overlays), but I thought it would look more authentic/retro with the reduced 3D window.
The power and stats bars were added as I had space available on the screen to show them. Mind, the original uses the player droid animations to depict power and health - faster spinning head dome and a facial expression - I believe Steve Turner borrowed these from Andrew Braybrooks 'Gribbly's Day Out'. Could possibly add these in along with other droid anims.
As for the zoom distance and visible play area, I don't want to show too much of the level to the player as you're never quite sure whats just off the screen and I think that adds to it. If the consensus is that its waaay too close then its a simple process to change the camera position and elevation.
Thanks for the comments guys.
