That's cool, but to really obfuscate things you should do "W Knight" and "B Knight".
(Love that king)
It occurs to me that you could do a "madlibs" sort of chess game where before the game you generate your pieces with a "Type a word for the pawn" and it will create the pawn, etc.
Course, that wouldn't go with your quicky graphics replacement thing you got going there.

Paul: Those chess pieces aren't quite symmetrical.
I think that for larger gfx the routine would need to be tweaked to create the best results.

Yeah, I noticed they're not quite symmetrical. Must have happened when I half-sized them.

When I entered Cyberman in the older version I got my current avatar which I think has hints of Cyberman in it. I tried in the new one and I get an odd shaped blob.

Indeed.
Does anyone have any more suggestions for types of sprites to generate? I can think of things like spaceships, aliens, but anything else?

Holy crap! It is! I figured he just drew it to look like it was generated by the proggie, but that's actually what you get!
(and I just randomly discovered you get the same picture from 'sully')

Yeah, the Happy Monster retro avatar generator is at times kinda scarily accurate. I've had a lot of fun trying various words. Anyone tried using Rich's code to do a simplistic Rogue-like yet? C'mon guys!

I'm still pondering what kind of game you could make which uses the avatars as levels. Action would be great.
A few ideas crossed my mind, but none make click so far. Motos, Sensitive (boring), worms?

Can we get multicoloured ones pls (of anything, chars or spaceships or whatever) ? And how about animated ones ? Simple animation would work I reckons.

I love it! Really nicely done. (bow) I had to port it to Java and run it on AppEngine as API: http://retroavatar.appspot.com/The guys at Gravatar are interested in porting to PHP and integrating.
